SPORTS CONCUSSIONS

In the last few years, major advances in the assessment and management of sports-related concussion have occurred that allow us to measure very subtle concussion symptoms, a field of medicine referred to as neuropsychological testing.

Rockwood Clinic is now offering neuropsychological testing to concussed athletes using a program called ImPACT (Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing). Developed by sports concussion researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, ImPACT is the first computerized evaluation system used to objectively evaluate the effects and severity of concussion.

This program allows a far more objective safe return-to-play decision instead of an arbitrary time out of activity. Our concussion evaluations will include the traditional clinical evaluations, combined with the 30-minute ImPACT test to determine the extent of the injury and return-to-play timeline. The test can be repeated over time to accurately assess healing and determine a safe return-to-play date for the athlete.
